  6.     This utility is a small loader designed to load Winice on Windows
  7. Millennium, without the need of the checked build of io.sys, which is part
  8. of the Millennium DDK, and is not freely available yet.

  15.     1. Install Softice for Windows Millennium normally. Make sure that
  16. winice.exe and winice.dat files are present in the Windows root directory.
  17. Don't rename winice.exe to anything else, the loader expects to find
  18. "winice.exe". Configure video display and mouse as usual.

  20.     2.Copy the file loader.exe into %WINDIR%\SYSTEM\VMM32\ folder.

  26.     2. Errors and troubleshooting

  29.     The utility relies on the %winbootdir% environment variable, and needs
  30. it to point to the Windows root folder. The Millennium io.sys versions which I
  31. checked all define this variable and correctly initialize it. If the Winice 
  32. loader cannot find it, it will complain about it, but will continue to boot
  33. Windows normally.
  34.     If winice.exe is not found (e.g. Softice was uninstalled), the loader
  35. will transparently continue to boot Windows.
  36.     If winice.exe fails execution for whatever reason (such as no XMS
  37. present, insufficient memory...) the user will be prompted by io.sys for
  38. the name of the Windows loader. Just enter at the prompt:

  40.         %WINDIR%\SYSTEM\vmm32.vxd
  41.  
  42.     This will boot Windows normally.
  43.     
  44.     In the event that your %WINDIR%\system\vmm32\ folder already contains
  45. a loader.exe file, DO NOT overwrite it with our loader. Please write down if
  46. your Windows is a special OEM build, the build number, and send us this info,
  47. attaching your io.sys and loader.exe.
  48.     Since this utility interferes with the boot process of Windows 
  49. Millennium, it is a good idea to have a rescue disk ready. If the system crashes
  50. or does not boot in a reasonable amount of time, boot from floppy and delete
  51. loader.exe. Keep in mind that we are not responsible for any damage this
  52. utility causes to you, your data, your mental sanity or global warming. It
  53. was written for ourselves, but we decided to release it because many crackers
  54. wanted to use Windows Millennium and Winice.
  55.     This utility was tested using Windows Millennium build 2525 and Winice
  56. for Windows Millennium 4.0.5 build 410 (the Windows 98 versions just won't cut
  57. it). Since both the OS and the debugger were beta builds, I cannot guarantee
  58. that it will work on other versions, because certain things we rely on might
  59. change. Yet mail us the build numbers, and we will fix the utility. Also,
  60. please report any anomalies while using Winice loaded this way.
